The Community Social Investment Program (CSIP) supports projects which help communities to meet their own sustainable development goals. Project funding is contingent on Board approval. The CSIP model requires partners to bring their own material and financial resources to the project. PNGSDP may agree to contribute funding provided project partners and communities contribute in cash and material support to significantly increase each project's value and impact on communities, with clear indications of support for future operations and ongoing maintenance costs. In 2009, the company's CSIP developed further and continued to expand the number and scope of its activities. The Program has been active in all districts of Western Province and has reached almost every province. An important focus has been the support given to the health providers of Western Province as they review the immense challenges in health and look for practical solutions. The Program continued to accept the challenge of increased opportunities to support wider health and education initiatives in Western Province in particular, providing support to the church health and education agencies serving the people there. The importance of engaging individual communities in responding to the issues of HIV and AIDS continues to be recognized as a priority of the program and a principle applied in other areas of social support. The most significant social investment activities for the people of Western Province, made with the three main churches, continue to be the K23.5 million Education and Health program; the ongoing HIV Community Conversations program; a K2.6 million safe water program; K3.2 million allocated to scholarships for secondary school graduates; K2 million for community sustainable development projects and K1 million start-up funding for the One Laptop Per Child program, which targets schools in North Fly and Telefomin Districts. The Churches, OK Tedi Development Foundation, the CMCA Trusts and the Provincial Government continue to be the main collaborators and partners in development activities in the Western Province. |
