Community Mine Continuation Agreements (CMCA) PDF Print E-mail

Communities in the Western Province, affected by the Ok Tedi Mine Ltd, provided their consent to the mine continuing its operation on the basis of new Community Mine Continuation Agreements (CMCA).

CMCA Middle Fly Trust

In 2006, OTML and CMCA communities undertook a formal review of the Community Mine Continuation Agreements, as required under the 9th Supplemental Agreement, in order to incorporate issues regarding the new environmental information. The compensation package of K1.1 billion is derived from three funding sources: OTML, PNGSDP and the State, including PNG Government's Tax Credit Scheme.

As a result of community consultation in 2007, the Ok Tedi Fly River Development Foundation was established to implement projects with the CMCA communities. PNGSDP has funded the design phase of the Foundation.

Women and children have been differentially recognised through 10% of the compensation package focused specifically on these populations in the impacted communities.

CMCA Communities

OTML has undertaken two major projects to mitigate environmental impacts. The dredging of material from the river and its storage in dumps at Bige reduces damage from sedimentation. During 2008 a major project was commissioned to remove pyrite from tailings at the mine through flotation, transport it through a pipeline to Bige, and to store it safely in engineered dumps in that area. This mitigates future risks from acid formation.
